On A Date with Phoebe Rose

There are so many taboos and so much malice in the way cis people interact with trans people that it can feel like we’re wholly different species. As part of SecX’s continuing mission to normalize and connect us with a wide variety of sex, body and gender positivity Phoebe Rose returns to the show to discuss her and other’s experience of life and love in a trans body.

Trans Incarceration

It’s conversations like the one I’m scheduled to have with Nell that make me want to dream of a better future. One where violent gender discrimination and institutionalized invisibility don’t further complicate the lives of the already incredibly vulnerable trans folx in our community. Catch the conversation with Trans Pride Initiative President Nell Gaither.

Sounds and Furies

There’s so much more to the way we sound then I think most of us realize- not just because of what people think of our voice but what it makes them feel. On a primitive, neurobiological level the shape and motion of our vocal folds says more to the world then you may imagine and this week speech language pathologist Tallulah Breslin joins Serafina and I in working to unlock our true voice

Gender Critical Thinking with Cindy Plaza

The atheism community prides itself on skeptical, critical thinking. For more then 2 years now every episode we’ve done highlighting trans issues, focusing on the science of gender, the error of biological sex and the rationale for trans policy, only to meet more then our fair share of trolls and troglodytes. This week we are joined by The Path of Reason host Cindy Plaza to discover whether or not critical thinking can support the gender critical trans exclusionary radical feminism we see so much of in our society.

Finding Your Voice

Billie was one of our last guests to join the show back on Earth That Was and comes back to us with an important idea for our new digital world- the way people hear your voice matters. This summer we began collecting pronouns from our callers because the more often we see ‘she/her’ paired with a booming baritone the more easily we can drop the gender critical bullshit and recognize that any voice can come from any one. And, as we work to make ourselves a more accepting society, Billie walks us through some of the dangers and opportunities found in the world of voice therapy.

Scibabe

’m not sure what the existence of SciBabe, Yvette d'Entremont’s science journalist brand and alter ego, really says about the world. On the one hand the need for junk science debunking and sensationalized science reporting feels like a sign of our times. On the other, holy shit is it cool that you can make a career for yourself taking down food bloggers and learning how to sleep. This week we invite Yvette to the show with binary sex, porn addiction and gas station supplements in our sights, plus your calls!

Serafina and Rachel’s Trans Agenda

The trans agenda- politicians, pundits and um * checks notes * children’s authors seem to have a lot to say about it. But what is it these uniquely beautiful people seem to want, other than a safe place to pee? What if, and I’m just spitballing here, we actually listen to a couple of trans folx? This week I’m joined by both Fan Favorite Serafina Smith™ and former Atheist Vanguardian Rachel Watson to find some guidance.

Filling In American Gender History

In an America that is still getting around to apologizing for Japanese American internment, it’s no surprise that expansion of legal protections for trans folx has brought greater visibility and some scary push back. What a lot of people don’t seem to understand is why there are SUDDENLY trans people everywhere, invading a bathroom or track and field team near you. Of course trans DNA has always been part of our genetic legacy but why haven’t we seen more trans figures in the past? Visiting Secular Sexuality to help answer some of these questions and offer us a few of the missing pages from our anthropology books is my colleague Billie Beard.

Following up on Facebook 'Facts'

This week Serafina joined Vi and I to sort through the ongoing struggle of learning just enough to stay informed but not too much as to feel paralyzed. In our complex, controversial world of memes and soundbites we endeavoured to dig just deep enough on the summer’s most perplexing taglines, and somehow ended up doing an hour long Netflix review. Have a look.
